What is Periodontal Treatment?

Periodontal treatment addresses gum disease – inflammation and infection of the tissue and bone supporting your teeth, usually starting as gum irritation from plaque and, left untreated, progressing to bone loss and eventually loose teeth. Bleeding, red, or puffy gums are the earliest warning sign, and periodontal treatment at that stage is far simpler than treating advanced gum disease later, which is why we flag it the moment we see it rather than waiting for it to become uncomfortable.

How Gum Disease Progresses

It typically starts as gingivitis – inflammation from plaque along the gumline that causes bleeding when you brush, which is fully reversible with proper cleaning. Left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, where the infection moves below the gumline and begins breaking down the bone and tissue holding your teeth in place, which is not reversible in the same way and is why catching it early matters – once bone is lost, treatment can manage and stabilise the condition, but it cannot fully regrow what was lost.

Deep Cleaning Below the Gumline

The core treatment is scaling and root planing – a deeper clean than a routine cleaning, removing plaque and tartar that has built up below the gumline and smoothing the root surface so gum tissue can reattach more easily. This is often done in sections over more than one visit and, depending on sensitivity, may involve local anaesthesia using our step-by-step painless protocol. For more advanced cases, this may be followed by antibiotics to control the bacteria, or, in the most advanced cases, minor procedures like gum grafting to rebuild lost tissue.

Why This Goes Beyond Your Gums

Gum disease left untreated does not stay contained to your mouth – research has linked it to broader health conditions including heart disease and diabetes, and it is the leading cause of adult tooth loss when left unaddressed. Treating it is not just about stopping bleeding gums; it is about protecting the teeth and bone underneath them long-term, and about the broader inflammation it can contribute to elsewhere in the body.

If your gums bleed when you brush or floss, that is not normal and is worth having checked – caught early, periodontal treatment is straightforward and usually resolves within a few weeks of proper cleaning. Left alone, it becomes a much bigger, slower problem to fix. We will also show you where the bleeding is actually coming from on your own gums, so the improvement over the following weeks is something you can see for yourself, not just take our word for.

Common questions

Is gum bleeding always a sign of periodontal disease?

It is usually one of the earliest signs, yes – specifically of gingivitis, the earliest and fully reversible stage. It is worth having checked rather than ignored, since it is much simpler to treat at this stage than after it progresses.

What is scaling and root planing?

A deeper clean than a routine cleaning – it removes plaque and tartar that has built up below the gumline and smooths the root surface so your gum tissue can reattach to the tooth more easily.

Can gum disease affect my overall health, not just my mouth?

Research has linked untreated gum disease to broader conditions including heart disease and diabetes, which is part of why treating it early matters beyond just protecting your teeth.

Is periodontal treatment painful?

We use a step-by-step painless protocol for every procedure – a topical gel numbs the surface first, so most patients barely feel the needle that follows, then we work slowly with a check-in at every stage. Most patients are surprised by how comfortable it is. You can raise a hand and pause us at any time.

How long does periodontal treatment take at Pune Dental Studio?

Treatment time varies by case. At your first visit, Dr. Sunayana Khade assesses you with a digital X-ray and an intraoral scan, not guesswork, which is what lets her give you a realistic timeline – including number of visits and what happens at each one – before you commit to anything.
